MKN FreeMEM (often associated with or distributed alongside MKN MemoryMonitor) is a legacy memory-optimization software utility developed by MKN Systems for older Windows operating systems like Windows 95, 98, NT, and XP. Core Function and Purpose
The utility was designed to give users control over their physical RAM. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, computers had very limited RAM (often 32MB to 512MB), and Windows was notorious for poorly managing dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) and background processes that stayed in the memory long after a program closed.
RAM Reallocation: The software intentionally forced the operating system to allocate a large block of memory to FreeMEM.
Swapping Inactive Processes: This sudden request forced Windows to swap out inactive background programs and unused DLLs into the hard drive’s paging file (virtual memory).

In modern operating systems like Windows 10 and Windows 11, tools like MKN FreeMEM are no longer necessary and are actually counterproductive.
Modern Memory Management: Modern OS kernels treat unused RAM as wasted RAM. They intentionally fill free memory with useful cache and pre-loaded software data, releasing it instantly when a heavy application needs it.
Performance Degradation: Tools that forcefully purge RAM bypass this native system. They force useful system caches onto the hard drive or SSD. When the system inevitably needs that data back, it causes severe stuttering and slower performance as it drags data back from storage into the RAM.
